Trauma Clinic Referral

All patients must be referred by a physician or nurse practitioner   To refer a patient, you must contact the orthopedic surgeon on-call through RAAPID.  The orthopaedic surgeon on-call will determine if the patient is suitable for our trauma clinic.

If your patient is deemed appropriate by the orthopaedic surgeon on-call, fax a referral to Central Alberta Orthopedics at 403-986-7258. You are encouraged to use our Orthopedic Referral Formand must indicate that this is a Trauma Clinic referral.

Please ensure the following information is included in either a letter or ambulatory care record accompanying your referral:

  • Patient’s name and PHN
  • Patient’s contact number
  • Presumptive diagnosis
  • Name of the referring practitioner
  • Name of the orthopedic surgeon accepting the referral

Instructions to give to patient:

  • Tell your patient to come to our office at 7:30 am the next workday morning or as per the specific directions given by the orthopedic surgeon on-call.  Your patient will NOT be contacted by the office before their appointment.  It is important that your patient be on time - the surgeon may be needed in the OR and may not be available if your patient is late to the clinic.
  • Give your patient directions to the Skyway Medical Centre, across the street on the north side of the Red Deer Regional Hospital.  Our address is Suite 300, 4309 - 52 Ave, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 6S4.
  • Patients should be fasting from midnight the night before their appointment.  This does not mean they are going to get surgery the next day, but does give us the option if operating time becomes available.
  • Patients are to bring a list of medications or their pill containers to their appointment.
  • Patients should wear clothing that will allow a physical examination of the affected body part.
