How to Refer a Patient

Referrals are accepted directly from physiotherapists that have valid PRAC IDs.  If you do not have a valid PRAC ID then you should advise the patient to see their family doctor for a referral.  Patients that have acute soft tissue injuries that occurred less than 6 weeks prior may also self refer by following the link to the Brent Sutter Sports Medicine Centre webpage.

Referrals should be directed to Central Alberta Orthopedics.

Information to be included in the referral:

  • Patient's full name and Alberta Healthcare Number.
  • Current contact information for the patient including phone number and address.
  • Name and PRAC ID number for referring physiotherapist.
  • Contact information to respond to the referring physiotherapist.
  • Presumptive diagnosis and brief description of how and when patient was injured to facilitate triaging of the referral.

Referrals should be faxed to 403-341-6990.

If you wish to designate a specific surgeon, you may do so, but please be aware this will likely mean a longer wait for your patient.

There is an on-site radiology suite and updated X-rays are not required unless otherwise communicated to you when your referral is triaged.

Referrals will be triaged by an orthopedic surgeon within 14 days.  We will send you and your patient a letter stating whether the referral has been accepted, and the approximate wait time.  We will contact your patient, when the time comes, with an appointment date and time.
