Trauma Clinic

The Orthopedic Trauma Clinic provides treatment for acute musculoskeletal injuries with a high likelihood of requiring urgent or semi-urgent surgery.

Specific examples of patients appropriate for the Orthopedic Trauma Clinic include:

  • Displaced/malaligned fractures despite attempted reduction
  • Complete tendon ruptures of quadriceps, patella, or distal biceps
  • Post operative wound infections in stable non-septic patients
  • Locked knees

This clinic allows ambulatory patients to see an orthopedic surgeon the next morning or as directed by the on-call surgeon at a scheduled time rather than waiting in the ER (or being transferred from a rural ER) for the orthopedic surgeon to become available during the day, evening or night.

The Orthopedic Trauma Clinic is on weekdays, Monday to Friday, with the exception of statutory holidays.  All patients for the clinic are expected to arrive between 7:30am - 8:00am.  We have set aside 90 minutes every morning  to accommodate these patients.  Patients arriving late to clinic may be asked to come back on a different day if the on-call surgeon is no longer available.

Patients are encouraged to not eat or drink anything from midnight prior to the appointment.  In some rare instances, patients have been able to have surgery on the same day as their consultation with the orthopedic surgeon.  It is more common to have surgery within a few days of the consultation.
